Having failed to crack the Indian market, Japanese car major Nissan now plans to drive in nearly half a dozen SUVs in the country to attract buyers and challenge rivals such as Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Ford. The company, which has been present in India since 2010, has not been able to gather significant momentum with buyers even as it tasted substantial success in export shipments.SUVs will be at the core of the company’s revival strategy as it looks to cash in on the growing love of Indians for off-roaders, Thomas Kuehl, president of Nissan’s India operations, told TOI.The company, which has a market share of less than 1.5% with local sales of around 53,000 units in 2017-18, will start the SUV challenge from January with Kicks, to take on products such as Hyundai’s Creta, Renault’s Duster and Mahindra’s Scorpio. The model is likely to come in as a fully-built import after the government made the route attractive by allowing shipment of 2,500 vehicles annually without homologation. “We are also looking at Pathfinder SUV. Nissan has a lot of strength in SUVs.”Nissan Terra may also arrive, which is a mid-sized SUV and is placed above Kicks. The X-Trail SUV can also make a comeback as part of the strategy.
