Australian Test opener Steve Smith has defended his promotion to the top order following an impressive performance against the West Indies. Initially at number four, Smith replaced David Warner as opener for the series, raising concerns about his ability to handle the new ball. After modest scores in Adelaide and a six in his first innings at the Gabba, Smith scored an unbeaten 91 in Brisbane, despite a losing cause.
